My Focus TDdi Fuel consumption

Fords Figures
The Ford Focus Estate's official fuel consumption according to Fords figures is
as follows for the 1.8 TDdi 90PS with 195/55x15" wheels:
Urban 39.8mpg, Extra Urban 64.2mpg, Combined 51.4mpg
Dave's figures
I will be giving a comprehensive details on
the fuel consumption of my focus estate over several months, from the absolute
worst gas guzzling figures what will make uncle Henry cringe to the best figures
I can possibly get from the car. My miles per gallon (mpg) fuel consumption
tests are of varied driving styles, from hard driving, normal driving to the
most economical driving at all possible on short and long journeys.
M.P.G. Test #1 - Motorway driving
This section of the miles per gallon test was done entirely on the motorway,
Four tests were done in January 2004, The car was fully loaded with luggage & 4
persons..
First test was over a distance 224 miles travelling at 70-80mph with fuel
consumption of 47.3mpg
Second test
over a distance 193 miles at driving speeds varying from 80mph - 95mph with
short bursts of acceleration for overtaking with fuel consumption of 37.5 mpg.
Third test, several short motorway trips over 4 days, to a total of 106 miles,
achieved 36.4mpg
Fourth test over a 193 mile motorway (return) journey, with driving speeds ranging
between 90 - 125mph, (mainly well over 100mph constant driving speed) with a
poor 32.2 mpg
M.P.G. Test #2 - Driving to work
I did this test over 290 miles of journey's about 8 -10miles each way
(15minutes drive time). Consisting of local roads and dual carriage way,
sticking to speed limits and stuck in short traffic jams in the morning rush
hour. In reality the engine only just reaches its correct operating temperature
by the time the engine is switched off at the end of the journey
This worked out at 38.49mpg.
Mid February 2004, I did a second driving to work and general run-around mpg
test, This one was over 331 miles over a period of two weeks this time my focus
estate achieved 40.01 miles to the gallon
The BP Ultimate Diesel challenge - Regular V's Ultimate
I thought I'd do a test on BP ultimate diesel, is there really a difference
between regular BP diesel and BP ultimate diesel for the ordinary man on the
street??? the price difference is big, but is it worth the extra?? at the time
it was introduced at our local filling station in Feb '04 Regular diesel was
77.9p per litre, and Ultimate was 81.9p per litre, to be fair, I am going to run
on Ultimate for a couple of tank full's so there is no cross contamination of
fuels before starting the tests. Results will be posted here
MPG with BP ultimate Diesel
This test was done on mainly A roads over distance of 219 miles on a trip to
the east coast and achieved my best mpg so far (march '04) an impressive
52.53mpg, but still quite a lot down on fords extra urban figures
